Four steps

How to add lyrics to an Instagram Reel

The same steps make a lyric video for Stories. Only the last tap in Instagram changes.

  1. 1

    Upload your song

Add an MP3, WAV, M4A or OGG file. Cut it to the section you want to share before you upload, since the lyrics are timed to the file you give Capify.

  2. 2

    Generate the lyrics

Capify transcribes the vocal and times every word. Check it in the lyric editor and fix any word or line that is off.

  3. 3

    Style it for Instagram

Pick a lyric animation, a font and a background, or use your own photo or video. Drag the lyrics into the middle of the frame.

  4. 4

Export and add it to a Reel or Story

Export a 1080 × 1920 video. In Instagram, start a new Reel or Story, choose the file from your camera roll, and post.

Reels or Stories for a lyric video

Both use a 9:16 frame at 1080 × 1920, so one export covers both. They do different jobs.

Reels lyric video

A Reel stays on your profile and can be shown to people who do not follow you yet. Post the lyric video here when the song is out and you want it found. Lead with the chorus, since the first line on screen is what someone sees before they decide to keep watching.

Instagram story lyrics

A Story goes to your followers and disappears after 24 hours. It suits a countdown, a snippet the week before release, or a different verse each day. Save the best ones to a Highlight so new fans can find them on your profile.

Pick a cover frame people can read

When you share a Reel, Instagram asks for a cover. You can pick a frame from the video or upload an image. Choose a frame with a full lyric line in the middle, because your profile grid shows a cropped version. The intro card can put your song title and artist name on the opening frame.

Music sticker lyrics or burned-in lyrics

Instagram has two built-in ways to show words, the lyrics in its music sticker and the captions sticker for speech. Burning the lyrics into the video is the third.

What about the captions sticker

The captions sticker turns what is said in a video into text. It is built for talking to camera. For singing, timed lyrics you can check and correct are the safer choice, and the lyric editor lets you change any word before you export.

Keep lyrics clear of the interface

Instagram puts your caption and username at the bottom of a Reel and the like, comment and share buttons on the right. Lyrics near the middle stay readable. You can drag them anywhere in the preview.

Instagram lyrics questions

How do I add lyrics to an Instagram Reel?

Make the lyric video in Capify first. Upload the song, let it time the lyrics, pick a style and export in 9:16. Then open Instagram, start a new Reel, choose the video from your camera roll, add a caption and share it.

Is there an Instagram lyrics generator that works with my own song?

Capify works with any song you upload as MP3, WAV, M4A or OGG. It generates the lyrics from the vocal and times every word, so it does not depend on the song being in Instagram's music library.

How do I add lyrics to an Instagram story?

Export your lyric video from Capify in 9:16, then add it to your Story from your camera roll. If you want the Story to last past 24 hours, add it to a Highlight on your profile.

Why does the music sticker not show lyrics for my song?

Lyrics in Instagram's music sticker come from Instagram's own library, so they only appear for songs it has lyrics for. A song that is new, unreleased or missing from the library may have none. Burning the lyrics into the video avoids that.

Should I use the captions sticker or burned-in lyrics?

Instagram's captions sticker transcribes what is said in a video and is built around speech. For a song, burned-in lyrics give you word-by-word timing you can correct and a style you choose, and the words stay in the file wherever you post it.

What size is a Reels lyric video?

Vertical 9:16 at 1080 × 1920 pixels, the same frame as a Story. This page opens the editor in 9:16 and exports 1080 × 1920, or 4K on Creator Pro.

How do I choose a cover for my lyric Reel?

When you post a Reel, Instagram lets you pick a frame from the video as the cover or upload a separate image. Pick a frame where a full lyric line is on screen, or turn on the intro card so the opening frame shows your song title and artist name.

Can I use the same video on TikTok and YouTube Shorts?

Yes. TikTok and Shorts use the same 9:16 frame, so the export works there too. For a horizontal YouTube upload, switch the project to 16:9.

Is it free to make a lyric video for Reels?

You can upload a song, generate the lyrics and preview the whole video for free. Exporting the full-length video needs a paid plan. The plans are listed on this page.

Can I put lyrics over my own footage?

Yes. Upload a photo or video as the background in Visuals and the lyrics play on top. You can also pick one of 53 animated backgrounds that move with the music.
