Four steps

How to make a lyric video for YouTube

  1. 1

    Upload the song

Add an MP3, WAV, M4A or OGG file. Leave the video at 16:9 for a regular YouTube upload, or switch it to 9:16 for a Short.

  2. 2

    Check the lyrics

Capify transcribes the vocals and times every word. Read through them in the lyric editor and fix any word or timing it got wrong.

  3. 3

    Style the video

Pick a font and a caption animation. Set the background to Pexels footage, your own video, your cover art or one of 53 animated backgrounds. Add an intro card with the song title and your name.

  4. 4

    Export and upload

Export an MP4 in 1080p, or 4K on Creator Pro, and upload it in YouTube Studio like any other video.

A lyric video for YouTube in 16:9

A regular upload fills the player on a laptop or a TV, so it wants the wide shape. Capify starts every project at 16:9 and exports it at full HD. On Creator Pro you can export 4K, which holds up better on a big screen.

Shape
16:9
Size
1920 × 1080
Creator Pro
3840 × 2160
File
MP4, H.264

YouTube Shorts lyric video in 9:16

Switch the editor to 9:16 and the video exports at 1080 × 1920, the full phone screen. Shorts can run up to three minutes, but most lyric Shorts use 15 to 60 seconds of the hook.

Capify works from the whole file you upload. For a Short, bounce the chorus out of your DAW as its own WAV and start a new project with it. Keep the lyrics in the middle of the frame, since the Shorts player puts buttons along the right edge and the caption along the bottom.

The same 9:16 export works on TikTok and Instagram Reels.

A YouTube lyrics generator that listens to the song

Typing out lyrics and lining them up with the vocal is the slow part of a lyric video. Capify does it from the audio. It transcribes the vocals and gives every word a start and end time, so the words appear as they are sung.

It works from your file, not from a lyrics website, so it handles unreleased songs and demos. Ad-libs and fast verses are where it is most likely to slip. Fix those in the lyrics editor before you export.

Capify began as an AI lyric video maker, and the same timing runs every caption style it has. To read the transcript on its own, try lyrics from audio.

General information to check before you publish. It is not legal advice, and Capify does not clear rights or license music.

Your own songs

If your distributor registers your music with Content ID, your own lyric video can be claimed. Many distributors can allowlist your channel. Set that up before release day.

Someone else’s song

The recording and the written lyrics each have their own copyright. A fan lyric video needs permission from the rights holders, or it may be claimed, muted or taken down.

The footage

Stock clips in Capify come from Pexels, whose license allows free use in videos. Animated backgrounds are drawn by Capify. Your own footage is yours to use.

Titles, descriptions and thumbnails

  • Title. Lead with the artist and song, then say what it is, as in “Artist - Song (Official Lyric Video)”. People search for the song name, so put it early.
  • Description. Paste the full lyrics, add streaming links and credit the writers and producers. The first two lines show above the fold.
  • Thumbnail. YouTube recommends 1280 × 720. Use the cover art and at most one short lyric line, large enough to read on a phone.
  • Shorts. Post the hook as a Short and link it to the full lyric video with the related video setting, so viewers who like the clip can find the song.

YouTube lyric video questions

How do I make a lyric video for YouTube?

Upload your song to Capify and it transcribes and times the lyrics. Check them in the lyric editor, choose a font, a caption animation and a background, then export the video as an MP4 and upload it to YouTube Studio.

What size should a YouTube lyric video be?

Use 16:9 at 1920 × 1080 for a regular upload. That is the shape of the YouTube player on a computer or TV. Creator Pro exports 4K at 3840 × 2160. For a Short, use 9:16 at 1080 × 1920.

Can I make a YouTube Shorts lyric video?

Yes. Switch the video to 9:16 in the editor and it exports at 1080 × 1920. YouTube accepts vertical Shorts up to three minutes long. Capify uses the whole file you upload, so cut the section you want in your DAW first and upload that.

Is Capify a YouTube lyrics generator?

Capify writes out the lyrics from the vocals in your song and times each word. It does not look lyrics up online, so it works for unreleased songs too. You can correct anything it mishears before you export.

Will my lyric video get a Content ID claim?

It can. If your distributor registers your recordings with Content ID, YouTube may claim uploads that use them, including your own. Many distributors let you allowlist your channel so your videos are not claimed. Ask yours how they handle it.

Can I make a lyric video for someone else’s song?

Only with permission. The recording and the lyrics are both protected by copyright, and Capify does not license music for you. Without permission, the video may be claimed or removed. This is general information, not legal advice.

Can I export a lyric video in 4K for YouTube?

Yes, on the Creator Pro plan. Other paid plans export 1080p, which YouTube plays in full HD.

Is the YouTube lyric video maker free?

You can upload a song, build the lyric video and preview it for free. Exporting the full-length video needs a paid plan. The plans and their prices are listed on this page.

What file do I upload to YouTube?

Capify exports an MP4 with H.264 video, a format YouTube accepts. Upload it straight from your downloads folder.

Can I add the song title and artist name?

Yes. Turn on the intro card to show the song title and artist name at the start of the video, each with its own font and colour.

Can I put a visualizer in my YouTube lyric video?

Yes. Pick one of 17 visualizer styles in Visuals and place it above or below the lyrics. It moves with your audio. See all of them on the audio visualizer page.
